Why we embrace mistakes in science Poster
Gee I love SCIENCE. You know what one of the best bits is? In science, we embrace mistakes!
Mistakes can change the way we think
Mistakes lead to discoveries
Mistakes help us draw conclusions
Mistakes lead to questions
Mistakes help us understand what is happening
Mistakes lead to reasoning
Mistakes teach us something new
This is something I have been trying to communicate regularly with my nearly 5 and nearly 7yo (who is a perfectionist). I make mistakes EVERY day. And I admit to them as often as I can. And I make sure my children see me admit to them.
One of the best papers I published in my scientific career was the result of a mistake (I totally forgot to add an 'ingredient' to my experiment). In all the previous reports, this ingredient was essential for the success of the experiment. HOWEVER, to my surprise, I made a discovery and published a new form of the protein I was studying ALL BECAUSE I made a mistake. So much learning comes from making mistakes.
